As the weather warms and more activity returns to the neighbourhood, we’re sharing a few reminders and updates for Western Apartments tenants. In this issue, you’ll find information on seasonal pest activity, community event expectations, safety reminders and a few practical tenant tips. Take a moment to read through and stay in the loop as we head into a busier season around the community.
Pest Control Reminders
Seasonal changes can lead to an increase in bug activity both inside and outside the building. Please do not be alarmed—this is a common occurrence at this time of year.
While the office provides pest control services, tenants are expected to take reasonable steps to manage general household pests. We recommend purchasing general bug spray or traps, which can be effective in managing seasonal pest activity.
If you are unsure what type of pest you are seeing, you can refer to the Abell Pest Control website for helpful identification resources or contact the office for guidance.
Community Events & Family Expectations
Western Apartments hosts regular community-building activities for residents and their families, including seasonal gatherings, wellness initiatives and neighbourhood events. These opportunities are designed to foster connection, create a welcoming environment and support a positive living experience for all residents.
As participation grows, tenants are asked to ensure dependents and guests are supervised and respectful of shared spaces, neighbours and property. This includes encouraging safe play, respecting equipment and supplies and minimizing noise in hallways and outdoor common areas.
Our communities include students, families and neighbours with diverse schedules and needs. Encouraging considerate behaviour—especially from children and visiting guests—helps keep events safe, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone. Thank you for helping maintain a respectful and engaged Western Apartments community.
Safety in the Community
As more residents spend time outdoors, our communities become busier with children playing, families walking and neighbours gathering in shared spaces. This is a positive sign of an active neighbourhood, but it also requires extra care from drivers.
Please be mindful of posted speed limits throughout the community and slow down when travelling on residential roads and through parking areas. Children may be playing near roadways and pedestrians, cyclists and strollers are more common at this time of year.
Increased awareness and reduced speeds help prevent accidents and ensure everyone can move safely throughout the neighbourhood.
Tenant Food Delivery Expectations
To support health and safety in our buildings, please only order food deliveries when you are home and able to receive them immediately. Unattended deliveries left in lobbies can spoil, attract pests and create sanitation concerns in shared spaces.
Food orders left in common areas for an extended period may be removed and discarded by staff. Thank you for helping us keep our buildings clean, safe and comfortable for all residents.
Tree Removal - Platt's Lane Estates
Several ash trees at Platt’s Lane Estates will be removed this month as part of ongoing property maintenance and safety efforts, with work expected to be completed by the end of March. These trees have been significantly weakened by the Emerald Ash Borer and may pose safety risks due to falling limbs or structural instability.
Stantec Consulting has been retained to complete a formal tree assessment and secure the required permits. The work is scheduled to be completed before migratory bird nesting season, when tree removal activities become restricted.
Electronic Vehicle (EV) Charging
We understand that some tenants have inquired about the ability to charge electric vehicles within Western Apartments parking areas. At this time, the infrastructure required to support EV charging does not exist in our residential parking lots and tenants should not attempt to install or use charging equipment in these areas.
Tenants who require EV charging can access Western University’s designated charging stations located across campus. Chargers are available in multiple parking locations and can be found using the ChargePoint app to confirm availability.
Current campus charging rates are approximately:
- $3.00/hour for Level 2 chargers
- $20.00/hour for Level 3 chargers (connection fees may apply)
Western has installed numerous EV charging ports across campus parking lots to support students, staff and visitors using electric vehicles.
If EV infrastructure becomes available in Western Apartments parking areas in the future, updates will be shared with the community.
